Queer film festival Mezipatra presents exhibition The Other Kind of Blue, which connects the work of the legendary filmmaker Derek Jarman and reaction to his work from Czech and Slovak artists Darina Alster, Tamara Moyzes and Radim Labuda. The exhibition takes place 28 October - 8 November Václav Špála Gallery, Prague.
The exhibition takes place within the framework of the 10th edition of the queer film festival Mezipatra in the prestigious Václav Špála Gallery. It showcases experimental films and short videos of the famous British film director Derek Jarman (1942 – 1994). The title of the exhibition refers to Jarman´s legendary autobiographic film Blue, made in the period when the author, infected with HIV, started to lose his sight. On the background of the shining blue of the projection Jarman narrates his experience of therapy, evokes the fragments of memories, visions of suggestive beauty as well as the fear of oncoming end.
Other Jarman´s films and videos presented at the exhibition are Angelic Conversations and Glitterbug as well as Left on Our Own Devices, a collection of music clips of the bands Pet Shop Boys, The Smiths, Patti Smiths, Suede and others, which also unmistakably reveal Jarman´s handwriting.
The project The Other Kind of Blue also features works of Czech and Slovak authors, Darina Alster, Radim Labuda and Tamara Moyzes, responding to Jarman´s theatrical sensuality, formal experimentalism together with his open politicization of his own homosexuality.
While Labuda´s video Black Angel is distinguished above all by the imaginary spirit and reflects the fascination with the view on male object; Darina Alster and Tamara Moyzes work with the language of media. In the video Bianca Braselli and Benedictus XVI, taking-down the meeting of a two-headed woman and the Pope on the occasion of the mass in Brno- Tuřany, they set the mirror to the approach of the Catholic Church to sexual and gender difference. Similarly topical is also the series of photographic portraits Czech Selection by Tamara Moyzes, who engaged local celebrities (actors, singers, TV presenters) in the role of mutilated victims of attacks motivated by racial intolerance and homophobia. Michal Šajmír, Dana Kolářová and Jarka Šnajberk photographed well-know persons for Moyzes. Video-workshop of Darina Alster takes place in the gallery basement throughout the duration of the exhibition, inviting the visitor for active participation and play with his/her own identify, the result of which shall be a collective, continuously originating video.
Other films of Derek Jarman will be screened at the festival Mezipatra: Edward II, War Requiem, Wittgenstein, The Garden. James Mckay, producer of a number of Jarman´s movies, will personally visit the festival and shall sit in the Main jury.
The festival was founded in 2000 and since then attracted over 63000 viewers, almost half of which identify as heterosexual. The tenth edition takes place in Brno (23-31 October 2009) and Prague (2-8 November 2009, cinemas Lucerna and Světozor) and a selection of Mezipatra programme tours 4 other cities in the Czech Republic. The 2009 programme includes 100 films and videos.
Festival held under the auspices of the former president of the Czech Republic Václav Havel, Pavel Bém (mayor of the city of Prague), Michal Hašek (governor, South Moravian region) and Martin Ander (deputy mayor of the city of Brno).
